Wadada (Three Generations)

In part of Tanzanian culture, strong bonds are formed to create support from childhood to adulthood for mother, daughter, and grandmother. The same can apply to fathers, sons, and grandfathers.

This helps with maintaining the culture of looking after each other, sharing thoughts, and giving opinions based on own experiences. Elders are also used as primary mentors to shape the life of new generations, at the same time keeping the legacy of the family name respected and alive.

Note in our old times, counselors can be appointed from your mother’s side for females, and from the father’s side for males. You might be confused to find your father’s siblings are also called “Baba” (Dad) and your mother’s siblings are also called “Mama” (Mum).
